The Problem

By definition, seclusion room monitoring and care is expensive, labour intensive and time consuming. Whether in a mental health seclusion room, prison isolation unit or police custody suite setting, delivery of acceptable levels of care may require investment of over €200,000 per annum, per client. Monitoring of priority seclusion room clients often involves one staff member monitoring one client on a 24 hour basis. Even with this intensive level of care, preventable incidents are still occurring, particularly related to seclusion, sedation or overdose. Seclusion room events can lead to internal investigations, Coroner Inquests or even Public Inquiries which can be lengthy, expensive, inconclusive and detrimental to public relations.
